Rotator Cuff Repair Surgery

Rotator Cuff Repair Surgery India

Rotator cuff repair is surgery to repair a torn connective tissue within the shoulder. The procedure will be done with an oversized (open) incision or with shoulder arthroscopy that uses smaller incisions. The rotator cuff is a cluster of muscles and tendons that form a cuff over the ball-and-socket joint. These muscles and tendons hold the arm in its joint and facilitate the ball-and-socket joint to maneuver. The tendons may be torn from overuse or injury. You will probably receive general anesthesia before this surgery. This means you may be asleep and unable to feel pain. Or, you will have regional anesthesia. Your arm and shoulder area will be numbed so that you do not feel any pain. If you receive regional anesthesia, you will also be given medicine to make you very sleepy during the operation.

Three common techniques are used to repair a structure tear

During open repair, a surgical incision is made and a large muscle (the deltoid) is gently moved out the way to do the surgery. Open repair is completed for large or additional complicated tears. During surgical operation, the arthroscopy is inserted through small incision. The scope is connected to a video monitor. This allows the physician to look at the inside of the shoulder. One to a few extra tiny incisions are created to permit different instruments to be inserted. During mini-open repair, any broken tissue or bone spurs are removed or repaired using an endoscope. Then throughout the open part of the surgery, a 2- to 3-inch (5 to 7.5 centimeters) incision is made to repair the rotator cuff.

The rotator cuff is a cluster of muscles and tendons that form a cuff over the ball-and-socket joint.

To repair the rotator cuff:

  • The tendons are re-attached to the bone.
  • Small rivets (called suture anchors) are typically used to help attach the connective tissue to the bone.
  • The suture anchors will be made from metal or material that dissolves over time, and don't have to be compelled to be removed.
  • Sutures (stitches) are hooked up to the anchors that tie the connective tissue back to the bone.

At the top of the surgery, the incisions are closed, and a dressing is applied. If surgical operation was performed, most surgeons take footage of the procedure from the video monitor to point out you what they found and also the repairs that were created.

Why you need this Surgery?

Reasons rotator cuff repair may be done include

  • You have shoulder pain when you rest or at nighttime, and it has not improved with exercises over 6 to 12 months.
  • You use your shoulder for sports or work.
  • You have weakness and are unable to try to do everyday activities.

Surgery is a good choice when:

  • You have a complete rotator cuff tear.
  • A tear was caused by a recent injury.
  • Several months of physiotherapy alone hasn't improved your symptoms.

A partial tear may not require surgery. Instead, exercise and rest are used to heal the shoulder. This approach is commonly best for those who don't place a great deal of demand on their shoulder. Pain can be expected to improve. However, the tear may become larger over time.

Recovery

Follow any discharge and self-care directions you're given. You will be sporting a sling once you leave the hospital. Some people also wear a shoulder immobilizer. This keeps your shoulder from moving. How long you wear the sling or immobilizer can rely upon the kind of surgery you had. Recovery can take 4 to 6 months, depending on the size of the tear and other factors. You may have to be compelled to wear a sling for four to six weeks after surgery. Pain is usually managed with medicines. Physical therapy can help you regain the motion and strength of your shoulder. The length of medical care can depend on the repair that was done. Follow directions for any shoulder exercises you're told to do.
