Spinal Fusion Surgery

Spinal Fusion Surgery India

Spinal fusion is surgery to permanently join together 2 or additional bones within the spine thus there's no movement between them. These bones are called vertebrae. You'll be given general anaesthesia, that puts you into a deep sleep thus you do not feel pain throughout surgery. The operating surgeon can create a surgical cut (incision) to look at the spine. Other surgery, such as a diskectomy, laminectomy, or a foraminotomy, is almost always done first.

Spinal fusion may be done:

On your neck or back, or over the spine and you would be lying on your stomach. Muscles and tissue are going to be separated to reveal the spine. On your aspect, if you're having surgery on your lower back. The operating surgeon can use tools referred to as retractors to carefully separate, hold the soft tissues and blood vessels apart, and have room to work with a cut on the front of the neck, toward the side. The operating surgeon can use a graft (such as bone) to hold (or fuse) the bones along for good.

Spinal fusion is most frequently done along with different surgical procedures of the spine. It may be done with different surgical procedures for spinal stenosis, such as foraminotomy or laminectomy after diskectomy in the neck.

There are several ways of fusing vertebrae together

•   Bone graft material strips will be placed at the back of the spine.
•   Bone graft material may be placed between the vertebrae.
•  Special cages may be placed between the vertebrae.
•  These cages are packed with bone graft material.
The operating surgeon might get the bone graft from completely different places:
From a different part of the body (generally around the pelvic bone), this is known as an autograft. Your operating surgeon can create a small cut over your hip and take away some bone from the rear of the rim of the pelvis.

From a bone bank, this is called an allograft. Also, a synthetic bone substitute can also be used. The vertebrae may be fastened along with rods, screws, plates, or cages. They are used to keep the vertebrae from moving till the bone grafts are absolutely recovered. Surgery can take 3 to 4 hours.
